Daily Talking Point There’s considerable debate about the value of the MLS All-Star game going around today. A sold-out Rio Tinto stadium in Salt Lake looked impressive last night, but the tepid match and the penalty kicks to determine the result seemed rather pointless — does anyone actually care that Everton won?  Steve Davis, writing on the official MLS site, comes to the rather generous conclusion that “it now looks more like a real game than a friendly.” Like in the NFL, though, the whole concept of the All-Star contest as a “real game” has a real problem — there’s a reason the Pro Bowl takes place after the NFL season, and is little more than a procession.

Filed under: Company News , Earnings Dow Chemical ( DOW ) shares soared over 10 percent in morning trading after the chemical giant crushed Wall Street’s estimates on an adjusted basis. While Dow posted a second-quarter loss , it was mostly driven by charges related to the acquisition of rival Rohm & Haas. Of course, sales in the current global recession were nothing to write home about. Dow said it lost $486 million, or 47 cents per share, compared with earnings of $762 million, or 81 cents per share during the same period last year.

For in town Chicago Condos and single-family homes, June sales were down 13.1% from June of 2008. Total sales for June 2009 were 1,982 units, compared with 2,282 units in June of last year. Despite being down from the same period last year, it was a 27.2% increase in sales from last month.

The latest new-home sales rate is 21.3 percent below the June 2008 rate of 488,000 and represents an 8.8-month supply of homes, according to the federal government.
