The U.S. is going to lend billions of dollars to Brazil’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras, to finance exploration of the huge offshore discovery in Brazil’s Tupi oil field in the Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil’s planning minister confirmed that White House National Security Adviser James Jones met this month with Brazilian officials to talk about the loan.

Existing home sales increased 7.2% in July to an annual rate of 5.24 million, easily beating the consensus expected pace of 5.00 million. Existing home sales are up 5.0% versus a year ago.   Sales were up in the Northeast, Midwest, and South, but down in the West. Sales increased for both single-family units and condos/co-ops.   The median price of an existing home declined to $178,400 in July (not seasonally adjusted) and is down 15.1% versus a year ago.

Austin American Statesman Good news for home sales: the Statesman reported that for the first time in the past year, the volume of home sales have returned to 2008 levels.  I still think we have a way to go to be out of the woods completely with all sectors of the housing market in Austin, but the large number of multiple offers we’ve seen in low inventory pockets such as South Austin, Circle C and Round Rock are great signs that the market is regaining strength.  Look for the areas with lowest inventory and high affordability to come back first, followed by areas with higher inventory and/or higher prices.

More than ever.. when I see a “Cheery” headline, I look for the gloomy note in it. I know it is there. So I saw a headline about the rise in housing sales, before reading I knew the reasons why.. when foreclosures go up there will be someone out there to collect them. So naturally the quantity will rise, but the values will go down. Add the (up to) $8k tax credit being offered. My hope is those grabbing the great deals are actually able to afford the homes they buy and don’t just create another foreclosure, and then yet again lowering the average prices.

The U.S. Dollar is expected to go volatile today on U.S. Homes Sales data and the speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke at 14:00 GMT. Bernanke is expected to discuss the economic crisis and recovery. With regards to the home sales data, the figure is expected to rise to 5.03 million, up from the previous figure of 4.89 million. Forex traders should follow both of these events closely as they are set to determine the USD’s main crosses for Friday’s trading.

Existing home sales surged in July. Sales for single family homes including condos and co-ops increased 7.2% July over June and were 5% higher than June 2008. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales came in at 5.2 million. In June of 2008 the SAAR was 5 million. Single family home sales not including condos were up 6.5% to a SAAR of 4.61 million. Condo and co-op sales were up 12.5% to a SAAR of 630,000. Inventories rose 7.3% to 4.09 million which represents a 9.4 month supply.

There’s a lot of news out today about statements Bernanke has made about the recession nearing an end, home sales rising, and other general talk of economic indicators reversing their slide. Yesterday morning, the Age ran a huge story above the fold saying that the Australian ambassador to China had been “rushed back to Australia for emergency meetings”, and that “Australia’s relationship with China was deteriorating”.
